Stretching Finished Work
Complete Policy Guidelines
Stretching blank canvas is a fabrication process while stretching finished art is a conservation practice. To ensure the wellbeing of artworks we have adopted the following policies:

General Notes:
● An insurance fee of 1% of the declared value of the work will be charged in addition to charges related to work performed. Declared value is determined by the owner of the work and CAS’s liability is limited to this declaration.
● CAS is unable to stretch works with declared valued over $25,000. Beyond that value we are happy to refer you to a reputable conservator who can stretch your work on our stretcher bars.
● To minimize risk to a finished work of art, we will only stretch rectangular paintings on our expandable stretcher bars (either wood or aluminum). This allows us to fine tune the size of the bar to match the nuanced shape, size, and elasticity of the work. This also allows for even, incremental tensioning.
● Our registration tolerance for rectangular works is approx. 1/8”.
● For circular works an expansion bar is not an option so we can only stretch finished works that have soft registration.
● Registration tolerance for circular works is up to 1/2". This allows for various fabrics to stretch irregularly if necessary.
● If a more economical solution is needed for stretching finished works, CAS is happy to offer a custom strainer bar at provided dimension for you or a third party to stretch.
Specific Requirements of the Piece:
● We only stretch artwork that is stable enough to lay face down.
● The artwork must have wide enough margins to stretch on a bar. Please provide total measurements of the painting including the available margin on all four sides.
● We require at least 1.5” of margin on each side in addition to the profile height of the bar. (ex: 1.5” deep bar requires 3” of margin on each side. 2” deep bar requires 3.5” margin on each side)
● Our standard stretching rate only applies to artwork stretched at our workshop. On site work is only offered on a case by case basis at an hourly rate calculated door-to-door including shop prep and strike.
Additional Notes, Limitations, and Exclusions:
● Custom Art Surfaces, LLC is not responsible for damage to artwork caused during the normal procedure of stretching. This includes but is not limited to: cracking of media, tearing, separation, or fraying of perforated or unstable substrate, disruption or damage to unstable media, etc.
● Custom Art Surfaces, LLC is not responsible for pre existing damage to artwork prior to CAS handling including but not limited to: tooling, tears, cuts, fraying, dirt, shrinkage, misshapenness, wrinkles, creases, etc.
